Corus invests further in hot rolled processing

01 Oct 2006

Corus has invested in new plant and infrastructure to create a new hot rolled processing centre in Llanwern.  The investment complements the a previous investment made by Corus earlier this year in a national Centre of Excellence for hot rolled decoiling in Dudley.

Created to provide customers with a fast, highly responsive service for hot rolled standard plate, the Llanwern Hot Rolled Processing Centre opened in September.

The decoiling line has a 30 tonne coil capacity and can decoil hot rolled plate from 3mm to 12.5mm in gauge and of up to two metres in width and 11 metres in length. The site also specialises in processing Durbar floorplate.

Llanwern also benefits from superb supply chain links with a direct link to the Corus Strip Products’ mill on the Llanwern site as well as rail links with the strip manufacturing business in Port Talbot.  These links are optimising operational efficiency, minimising lead times and reducing transportation costs for both Corus and its customers.

Sam McCloy, General Manager of the Llanwern Hot Rolled Processing Centre, said: “This investment reflects Corus’ continued commitment to ensuring we provide an industry leading service in an increasingly competitive environment.

“The investment in Llanwern has enabled us to provide a much faster, more responsive service and improve supply to the South Wales, South West and Irish markets. In September alone, we delivered more than 200 tonnes of hot rolled sheet per day to Liverpool docks for shipment to Ireland.”
