Seventh heaven for Corus Wellingborough
01 Jan 2006
Corus Metal Centre, Wellingborough has achieved ISRS Level 7 - one of the highest levels of health and safety accreditation awarded by the International Safety Rating System (ISRS).
All Corus Service Centres are required to obtain ISRS accreditation, reflecting the company’s commitment to improving health and safety standards. But Wellingborough became the first Centre to achieve Level 7 following an in-depth audit using the ISRS small business package developed for Corus by DNV. This acheivement also led to the Wellingborough centre being awarded a Quarterly Health & Safety Award in the small business category by Corus directors, for which it received a cheque for £250 for donation to charity.
The Centre’s health and safety performance was assessed in eleven key areas including employee health, training, inspections and leadership. It achieved an average score of 77% across all eleven areas - twenty-seven percentage points above the required level of 50% - and excelled in the provision and use of personal protective equipment with a score of 100%.
Wellingborough Metal Centre was also praised for its superb communications regarding health and safety, and for creating a culture in which staff are encouraged to take daily responsibility for health and safety across all areas of the site.
“When it comes to health and safety we are all equal.” said Sally Chisholm-Lee, General Manager at Wellingborough. “There’s no hierarchy and we actively encourage staff at every level to point out and address any health and safety issue they feel is of concern. Every comment is treated seriously. “We are so committed to raising health and safety standards that the Wellingborough team is even advising customers on how to get the International Safety Rating Standard within their own businesses.”
The Wellingborough Metal Centre team was presented with its official Certificate and also given £250 to donate to charitable causes of their choice. The money is to be donated to Kettering Renal Unit and local cancer charity, "The Crazy Hats Appeal".
