It’s all stacking up for Sperrin Metal!

02 May 2007

For market leading storage solutions company Sperrin Metal, sourcing the highest quality of strip steel is always of critical importance for their quality engineered storage systems.

Steel from Corus Ireland has been the preferred choice for over 30 years, as their Draperstown business has grown to employ 150 people.

The company use a combination of sheet and strip steel to manufacture their storage systems which are all custom designed products specifically shelving, racking, mezzanines and lockers.

Peter Gormley, production director for Sperrin Metal, spoke about their long-standing relationship with Corus.

“Because most of our storage systems are custom designed our requirements for steel is different each week. We order on a Thursday for the following week and receive our order on Monday ready for production.

“Through close communications between ourselves and Corus, we have always received good service from the company and they have always supplied us with consistently high quality steel.

“The quality of our structural steel is crucial for us as we adhere to SEMA guidelines for strength. We always test all structural steel we receive and the results from Corus material have shown the steel quality to be consistently excellent,” he added.

David Craig, Strip Products account manager at the Corus Lisburn site explained that as a local supplier Corus can be very responsive to the changing needs of customers like Sperrin Metal.

“Corus keep a stock of parent coil and we can process the regular order for Sperrin quickly and deliver on time so that we are working with the company’s just-in-time supply chain principles.”

“If Peter contacts me with requirements to meet urgent contracts, we can usually respond quickly to deliver his needs within the timeframe.”

“Having the new Stratix computerised order and delivery system has enabled us to keep track of any order from the moment it is placed to the point of delivery with the customer and increased our overall reliability of deliveries,” he added.

Talking about the future for Sperrin Metal, Peter Gormley spoke of new developments in the company that should increase their weekly steel requirements.

“We are expanding the business into additional areas and have recently purchased another new high tech powder coating facility, costing over half a million pounds.  This new facility will further improve the efficiency of the factory and enable production capacity to increase on a weekly basis”.

“Not only are we able to offer this facility in-house for our own custom engineered storage systems, but we are also able to offer the service to external customers, a market that we have found is growing very fast.”

This 800ft long Ercon paint plant purchased by Sperrin can cater for items up to 7.5m in length, up to 1.8m in depth and 0.75m in width with load capacity of up to 50 kilos per metre.
