Corus donate £1000 holiday vouchers to hospice

21 May 2007

Staff at Corus’ Strip Processing Centre at the Steelpark in Wednesfield have donated holiday vouchers worth £1000 to St Giles Hospice in Whittington.  The vouchers were presented to the Centre by Corus management in recognition of the business’s exceptional performance at the annual Corus Way Awards.

The Strip Processing Centre received the Selective Growth award for increasing Corus market share in hot dipped galvanized steel by five per cent to 27 per cent and increasing slitting volume by 35 per cent, taking external sales from 185kt to 250kt per annum.

Richard Harding, operations manager, said: “We have won awards in previous years and always donate the prize to a local charity, but this year our choice of charity was very personal.  Our colleague John Hawkshaw recently lost his wife Lyn to cancer and during her illness the staff at St Giles Hospice cared for her.  The hospice provides an invaluable service to patients and their families, and we are pleased to be able to help.”

Commenting on the donation, St Giles Hospice fundraising co-ordinator Laura Pennycuick said: “We are extremely grateful for the donation from Corus.  We rely heavily on fundraising and charitable donations to raise the £15,000 per day needed to run all the services we offer.  The vouchers will be used in a number of fundraising events throughout the year and will generate more than three times their value.”

St Giles Hospice provides high quality medical and nursing care for local people living with cancer and other serious illnesses, as well as supporting their families and helpers. The hospice makes more than 7000 home visits each year to care for patients.
